The Alex Haley Museum and Interpretive Center celebrates the life and accomplishments of the acclaimed author, Alex Haley, most know for Roots: The Saga of an American Family and The Autobigraphy of Malcom X. The 6500 square foot award-winning facility features interactive exhibits, interpretive education, artifacts from Mr. Haley's life, and mementos from his career. The museum is located behind Haley's boyhood home and final resting place, in Henning, TN, 45 miles north of Memphis. Known as the Palmer Home, Alex Haley's boyhood home was built in 1919 by Will Palmer, his maternal grandfather, and opened as a museum in November 1986. As a child, it was on the porch of this house that Haley heard from his maternal grandmother, the family stories that inspired him to write "Roots."
