Like other cities, not every message out there is positive, but here are a few tips for communicating with others about our city and some of the challenges we’ve faced:
Telling Our Story When We Have Challenges
Our message for Memphis is clear! We love Memphis. Now we need to spread that message to the world and speak with one voice.
Like other cities, not every message out there is positive, but here are a few tips for communicating with others about our city and some of the challenges we’ve faced:
Tip 1: Acknowledge the Challenges
- Like most other cities in America, we have had to deal with an increase in crime, but our city’s plan is starting to work.
- When we are asked about crime, it is because Memphis has received a lot of negative media coverage, especially around high-profile cases, like the tragic murders of Eliza Fletcher and Tyre Nichols.
- We cannot send a positive message out without acknowledging the problems that we face.
Our message:
- Memphis, like every large city in America, is faced with the same issues. We are not alone in battling crime.
- Our Mayor, Paul Young, has implemented an aggressive crime-fighting strategy and we are starting to see positive results.
- Our crime rate, across all major crimes, is down 13%, evidence that our plan is working.
Tip 2: Pivot to the Positive
- We are a unique city and a great place to visit!
- Let’s remember the good things we have to offer and what makes our city great.
Our message:
- Memphis is America’s city.
- We are the largest minority-majority city in the nation, which means we have a rich history in the South, going back to the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
- We are a community of many cultures, which fuels our creativity.
- Ours is the city of music: We are the home of Beale Street; the greats of Soul, R&B and The King (Elvis Presley), as well as young stars like NLE Choppa, Moneybagg Yo and Young Dolph.
- This energy feeds the "soul" in more ways than one, thanks to our world-famous barbecue and authentic soul food.

Tip 3: Encourage Action
- Let's encourage our visitors to return and become ambassadors for our city.
- You can also encourage your friends, family and neighbors to become champions of the place we call home.
Our message:
- We‘ve created this portal where you can find shareable content and sign up to be an ambassador.
