MLK50 Official Events

The National Civil Rights Museum has joined forces with several destinations around the country to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the year leading up to April 4, 2018: the 50th anniversary of Dr. King's assassination at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. Here is a list of planned events.

Youth Voices and "Drop The Mic" Poetry Slam

August, 2017 - Youth will come together under the leadership of Bridges and the National Civil Rights Museum to discuss their role in promoting positive social change. Audience members of all ages will enjoy various poetry styles in youth-led competition that bring unique prose to the forefront as poets take you on a journey through social justice using nothing but their words.

MLKSoul Concert Series

September, 2017 - Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy free live music from the museum lawn every Friday in September starting at 6 p.m.. In addition to live music you'll find local food trucks, spoken word performances, a DJ, and more.

King Day 2018

January, 2018 - On the national holiday and actual birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the National Civil Rights Museum will remember his life and legacy with activities including daylong performances, youth-centered edutainment, and a Healthy Community Pavilion. In the spirit of service and in honor of Dr. King's Poor People's Campaign, the Museum will hold its annual Mid-South Food Bank Drive and Lifeblood Drive, to serve as a center for community resources and engagement.

MLK50: Where Do We Go From Here? Symposium

April 2-3, 2018 - The first day of this two-day symposium features scholars and practitioners of law who will lead a legal discussion at the University of Memphis, Cecil B. Humphreys School of Law. The second day will be hosted at the National Civil Rights Museum and will feature prominent thought leaders and scholars who will assess the nation's progress on the human rights issues highlighted by Dr. King.

An Evening Of Storytelling

April 4, 2018 - This evening cocktail reception will feature familiar human rights icons from the past and present, as well as future historymakers who will share their stories of adversity, hope and peace within the human rights movement.

50th Anniversary Commemoration

April 4, 2018 - For the 50th anniversary of Dr. King's death, the National Civil Rights Museum will call upon the most iconic leaders of the human rights and social justice movement to convene in Memphis and honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Also, people who were with Dr. King on that day will also be invited to share in the experience of remembering one of the most critical and most recognizable leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.
