Memphis Has A Need For Speed

Maybe it’s our moonshining history or Burt Reynolds in a black Trans-Am or the countless dirt tracks humming loud through a Saturday night that make car racing in the south so rich and mythic. It’s probably all of that and more. Watching people go fast under lights is as much in our blood in Memphis as football on a Saturday afternoon. We relish the speed, yes, and the danger, too, but it ultimately always comes back to the community, those fellow race fans in the infield or the stands, camped out, sunburned, and toasting the checkered flag.

And in Memphis, we turn to two places to celebrate our need for speed: Memphis International Raceway and Autobahn Indoor Speedway.

Memphis International Raceway

To the uninitiated, car racing is about European formula one (think the Indy 500) and NASCAR. Truth is that racing takes many forms. This is what makes the Memphis International Raceway (MIR) the premier racing destination in the Mid-South. It has three complete tracks including a road course, drag strip, and three-quarter-mile paved tri-oval. MIR’s 2016 season is about to start its engines and its first major event is truly one for the people.

On February 13th, MIR will host a Test-N-Tune session for all street legal vehicles on their drag strip. In addition to this locals mostly event, they plan to put on a Midnight Madness event with Traction Optional Drift, Street Warz, and a Sunday Funday with Drifting. But of course, the real racing will start with International Hot Rod Association’s Summit Bracket Racing Series.

Shifting to their national level events, look out for the 30th Annual Super Chevy Show, Professional Drag Racing Association (PDRA) events, IHRA Summit World Finals, Ford and Mopar Showdown, and the Great American Bracket Race to all return for another season. And for new events, keep an eye on the Fortune Hunter Big Bucks Series, MOD Motor Mustangs, and Truck Mania.

All events are subject to change, so be sure to check out their calendar for updates.

Autobahn Indoor Speedway

If you thought all we did was watch other people go fast, you’d be mistaken. For most of us growing up, it was about ATVs or dirt bikes. Maybe we got lucky enough to pay for a day on a test track. But the great thing about the growth of car racing is the experiences now available to the average fan. In Memphis, those experiences can be had at the Autobahn Indoor Speedway.

A European style indoor go-kart experience, Autobahn Indoor Speedway is the largest indoor karting facility in Tennessee with approximately 40,000 square feet of perfect racing conditions every day. With its Grand Prix-style track and a fleet of high-speed F1-inspired electric Italian pro-karts, the Autobahn experience allows friends and family to compete against each other, the challenging twists and tight corner of the course, and reach top speeds of 50 mph.
