We Got the Beat at the Memphis Drum Shop

March to the rhythm of your own beat at the Memphis Drum Shop. This Midtown specialty store is a must-see for any musician and boasts six showrooms brimming with popular brands like Ludwig, DW, Pearl, Tama, Mapax and Zildjan. Any percussion aficionado will be suitably impressed by the wide variety of tools and accessories, as well as unconventional instruments like tympanis, tambourines, bongos and even more cowbell.

But, you don’t have to be a drummer to enjoy what the Memphis Drum Shop has to offer. The vintage room showcases historic artifacts and memorabilia from percussionists like Steve Ferrone, Elvin Jones, Billy Gladstone, Buddy Rich and even bands like Kiss and The Beatles.

Visitors come from around the world to tour the cymbal room, a unique, thermostatically controlled sanctum that you have to be invited to enter. The cymbal room, also known as the Memphis Gong Chamber, holds the largest collection of gongs and cymbals on display in the world. However, the star of the chamber is an enormous, seven-foot gong, and when it’s struck, you can feel the vibrations all the way down to your toes. Memphis Drum Shop owner, Jim Pettit, is always happy to show off the cymbal room and talk about each of the gongs, the alloys that their made from and the differences in tones that each produces.

Even if you’ve never held a drumstick in your life, the Memphis Drum Shop has you covered. In addition to reasonably priced beginner kits that have everything you need to get started, they also offer lessons for every level of proficiency in the percussion school. There are also classrooms on the second floor where drum clinics and master classes are held.

The Memphis Drum Shop is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and hosts several concerts every year as musicians from around the country come to Memphis to perform at this one-of-a-kind venue. Get a full list of events on their website and make sure to stop by this percussion paradise for an extraordinary experience.
