Memphis Neighborhoods

From the exciting energy of Downtown Memphis to world-class casinos and charming small towns featuring historic Americana attractions, Memphis area neighborhoods are eclectic enough to engage the interest of visitors of all ages. Take a quick tour through our neighborhoods below and get ready to explore the exciting world of Memphis on the Mississippi.
 
Downtown Memphis

Music. Food. Shopping. Carriage Rides. Sports…The hub of the entertainment district, downtown Memphis is home to a number of restaurants, hotels, bars, and of course, Beale Street. Downtown Memphis overlooks the mighty Mississippi River and Mud Island and plays host to a number of trendy smaller areas like the eclectically designed Harbor Town made up of a unique village like design much like Seaside, FL. There is also the South Main Arts district full of revitalization. Shops and warehouse lofts are in abundance in this little artists' enclave that attracts many young professionals to the area.

South Memphis

We can't leave out the neighborhood Elvis chose as his home. South Memphis is made of Whitehaven and Oakhaven and is where you can find Memphis landmarks such as Graceland, Stax Museum and Elmwood Cemetery. South Memphis is just south of downtown and was once a bustling industrial area of the city.

Midtown Memphis

Think vintage. Think diverse. Midtown Memphis is just a little East of the hustle and bustle of downtown Memphis and is full of historic and majestic streets lined with austere old mansions. Midtown is comprised of several historic districts such as Central Gardens, Evergreen and Idlewild. It is also where you will find the beautiful Overton Park which includes the Memphis Zoo and the Memphis College of Art and Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. In Overton Square you can get your fill of nice restaurants and comfortable watering holes alike. You will also find the hip and trendy Cooper-Young Historic district complete with its boutique shopping, antique stores, art galleries, coffee shops, and eccentric restaurants and nightlife. With all of this going on, Midtown tends to groove to its own beat.

East Memphis

Moving further out from the trendy Midtown area of Memphis is East Memphis where you will find another area teaming with corporate headquarters and new upscale shopping and dining. This is the area you will find such shopping as Laurelwood, Oakcourt Mall, and Regalia. East Memphis also plays home to the Memphis Botanic Gardens and the University of Memphis. Here you will also find a variety of residential areas ranging from affordable homes for first time home owners to the beautiful Walnut Grove area complete with its stately homes.

Cordova

The newest area of migration east of the city is Cordova. This is the classic suburban atmosphere complete with new homes, new restaurants, new shopping centers and the Wolfchase Galleria Mall where you will find all of your standard stores represented. Cordova is a neighborhood that is popular with new families and younger singles alike.

Germantown

Home to the Germantown Charity Horse Show, Germantown Performing Arts Center and Mike Rose Soccer Complex, Germantown is one of the older surrounding neighborhoods of Memphis with mature residential areas lined with trees and quiet streets. Known for its upscale shopping and structured appearance, Germantown is a great area to escape the fast pace of the city.

Bartlett

Just a little northeast of the city of Memphis you will find the city of Bartlett. Bartlett is a quiet suburb that many Shelby county residents find to be a great family oriented environment. Comprised of a quaint small town area and many recreational facilities, Bartlett is a good place for picnics and reunions. For performing art enthusiasts, visit the Bartlett Performing Arts and Convention Center for one of their many theatrical performances.

Collierville

Just east of Memphis is the rapidly growing town of Collierville. Known for its quaint historic town square and main street packed full of antique stores and cafes, Collierville is gaining a tremendous amount of interest from visitors. While in Collierville be sure to take a carriage ride through the historic downtown area or a walking tour of the town. The town also hosts a number of fun festivals. Millington

If you head about 20 minutes north of Memphis, you will find yourself in the town of Millington. Once home to the Millington Naval Base, the town is now a quiet residential world that offers many recreational choices. Enjoy NASCAR racing at Memphis Motorsports Park; golfing and camping, canoeing and hiking in the Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park. Millington also offers baseball and softball at the USA Stadium from tee-ball through the Junior College World Series.

Arlington

East of Memphis lays historic Arlington, a small town with a lot of character and a rich history. Arlington in April is a popular one day family festival featuring crafts, folk art demonstrations, a Children's Corner and the Famous ’"Lemonade Garden." Tours of historic buildings such as the Rachel H.K Burrows Museum, a 1905 bank now listed on the National Register of Historic Places; an 1800's Blacksmith Shop complete with a brick forge and bellows; the historic post office museum and Wilson's Store, a hub of Arlington commercial and social life since 1893 now run by fourth generation descendents, make Arlington a great day trip destination anytime of the year.

Southaven, MS

To the south of Memphis, you'll find a Mississippi town where southern hospitality and modern convenience collide. The ever-changing city of Southaven provides you with all of the modern day shopping, dining and lodging you could ask for while the DeSoto Civic Center is home to a host of events ranging from big ticket concerts to major sports events. The Mississippi RiverKings hit the ice there all season for some rough-and-tumble ice hockey action.

Tunica, MS

Now the third largest gaming area in the country, you are sure to find all the action in this town right next to the Mississippi river. Just a 30 minute drive south of Memphis, Tunica is comprised of first class casinos complete with all the tables, slots and poker you can get your hands on. You will also find fine dining and buffets galore. When you get ready to take a break from the tables you can enjoy a round of golf or a ride on the Tunica Queen riverboat and enjoy seeing how Tunica has transformed a Mississippi Delta town into a bustling gaming world.

West Memphis, AR

Over the river, across the bridge to West Memphis, AR we go. Just on the opposite bank is another small town that feeds into Memphis. While in West Memphis be sure to visit Southland Park Racing and Gaming where you can watch and bet on the greyhounds or play electronic gaming. If you are into speed, be sure to make a stop at the Riverside Freeway where you can get a thrill from sprint car and stock car racing.
