Hockadoo! Memphis the Musical Comes Home
Front of the house lights dim and the curtains open. The scene is an underground Beale Street Blues club set in the 1950’s situated to draw your eye to the large piano set in the middle of the stage. The only light that manages to creep into the dusty and dimly lit set is from the neon signs above.
Felicia, the main attraction at Delray’s (an African-American bar) gets interrupted by a half inebriated, excentric Huey Calhoun (character is loosely based on Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips). Huey’s down on his luck, trying to adhere to the expectations put on him from his hard-boiled mother and the passions that light his fire. From that point out, Memphis bursts off the stage with electrifying songs and irresistible dance numbers.
The score doesn’t miss a cue either as Huey and Felicia’s lives crisscross throughout the musical - Huey with a obsession for playing race records on a white radio station and Felicia with the zest to be on mainstream radio. As Huey gains popularity he uses his leverage to catapult Felicia’s career. But, as their secret relationship gets exposed by a gang of white men, will Huey lose everything he’s worked for?
You’re invited on this incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves as the national tour of Memphis kicks off in the city that shares it’s soul - Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis is the winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2010 (along with three other Tony Awards that year) and will be showcased at the beautiful Orpheum Theatre for 13 shows over a nearly two week opening run opening Friday, October 14.
By the end of the show, you’ll be on your feet, swaying to the beat, taking a little part of Memphis home with you. Buy your Memphis tickets today at the Orpheum box office or online at Ticketmaster.
