Memphis Redbirds Baseball is a Hit
Hey slugger, dust off that mitt and put on your best hot-dog-eating jersey, because baseball season is back!
The Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A minor league baseball affiliate to the St. Louis Cardinals), celebrating 14 years at beautiful AutoZone Park, are ready to mop up the Pacific Coast League with All-Star caliber studs like outfielders Oscar Taveras and Randal Grichuk along with hard-throwing left-hander Tyler Lyons.
Located in Downtown Memphis across from DoubleTree Hotel and within easy walking distance of Beale Street Entertainment District, AutoZone Park sports some of most exciting action in all of the city. With the largest (60’ x 60’) videoboard in minor league baseball, AutoZone Park has drawn rave reviews from publications such as Sports Illustrated and Baseball America, having been called “one of America’s 10 Best Ball Park Vacation Destinations.”
The Redbirds start the 2014 season on the road, but return home for a 4-game series against the rival Iowa Cubs (Chicago Cubs) on April 11. The 72-game home schedule features games against Round Rock Express (Texas Rangers), Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers), Sacramento River Cats (Oakland Athletics) and many more.
Pull out the Sharpie and circle these key dates on your calendar: April 13 will go to the dogs as Jake the Diamond Dog returns to AutoZone Park. Hot dogs are just a buck that night and dogs get free admission with their paid owners. The Redbirds pay tribute to our sister city in Egypt by wearing themed hieroglyphic jerseys on June 7 (that fans can bid on after the game) and the first 2,000 fans at the park on June 27 will receive a free St. Louis Cardinals replica ring.
What, you don’t have a Stan Musial bobblehead?!? Well, this year's your chance. Get to the ballpark early on June 6 and take a piece of the Hall of Famer home with you. The Redbirds are giving away three other great bobble heads this year too - May 16, July 18 and August 22.
The home schedule features 14 spectacular fireworks shows, including every Saturday home game and two on Memorial Day and Independence Day weekends.
Back by popular demand are end-of-the-week Block Parties on the plaza at AutoZone Park. Come early on Fridays (gates open two hours early) and jam to live music and soak away work stress with ice-cold beer specials.
Hands down, the one concession food you must try this year is the barbecue nachos - a mound of Rendezvous pulled barbecue pork (also available in chicken) layered over nacho chips and covered with flowing cheese. Wash it all down with ice cold adult beverage like a frozen margarita or speciality beer and you’ll see why BBQ nachos beat out hotdogs as the #1 selling item at AutoZone Park.
Fans with dietary restrictions will love the addition of vegetarian specialties like black bean burgers and fresh fruit and salad bowls. Great grub like this is one of the main reasons why AutoZone Park was recently named a Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballpark by PETA.
A Redbirds game is good fun for the entire family. Pull out the blanket and grab a spot on the left field hill as the Memphis sun sets over the roaring Mississippi River. Kids love chasing down a home run ball that lands in that area.
Got young kids that tend to get antsy? Keep their attention with carnival games on the Boardwalk, pictures with Rockey the Redbird (join his Kid’s Club for special ticket deals and activities) and the opportunity to round the bases after the game.
So, rub some dirt on it and get out there and cheer on our boys of summer! Purchase your Memphis Redbirds tickets online at MemphisRedbirds.com, call 901-721-6000 or buy in person at the AutoZone Park box office.
