| The entrance to the Memphis Zoo. Based on Egyptian "Pylon" architecture, it consists of two tapering towers, joined by a less elevated section with the entrance enclosed between them. This architecture was typically used for temples of higher learning in ancient Egypt. |
The Memphis Zoo was ranked "#1 Zoo in the U.S." by TripAdvisor.com and has more than 3,500 animals that call it home. The zoo, which covers 76 acres of Overton Park, has been a major tenant there for more than 100 years.
The Memphis Zoo has invested over $80 million since the early '90s on renovation and expansion and is widely considered one of the finest zoological parks in the nation.
-
In April 2003, the Memphis Zoo became one of only four U.S. zoos to exhibit Earth's most treasured endangered species - the giant panda.
-
The zoo has an underwater viewing area with swimming polar bears that you can almost touch.
-
There is also an Elephant Exhibt Expansion to make way for a new baby elephant due in July!
