Memphis Goes Full Steam Ahead with the American Queen
Memphis has many forms of travel: rail, road, runway and river – and it’s getting better all the time. Enter the American Queen.
Coming spring 2012, you will be able to recall the golden age of paddlewheel travel as the American Queen sets sail on the Mississippi River. This steamboat will be the only overnight riverboat cruise on Ole Man River giving you a unique view of life along the Mississippi from New Orleans to Memphis.
No expense will be spared in restoring the American Queen to its original glory. Wood veneer and other special features will line the 418 foot-long vessel. Travel in style aboard this floating hotel of 222 state rooms accommodating 436 people and offering plenty of entertainment, music and more to keep you busy day and night. Click here for dates, cruise packages and general info.
When the boat docks in Memphis, expect excitement. You will find yourself a few blocks from one of the largest entertainment districts in the Mid-South, Beale Street. This world-famous stretch of blues clubs, restaurants and retail shops is the gateway to fun in the Bluff City. As you step on his hallowed ground, grab a tall draft then shuffle over to B.B. King’s Blues Club, Silky O’Sullivan’s or Hard Rock Café. Pick up a souvenir at A. Schwab’s. Lord knows, if you can’t find it at Schwab’s, they haven’t invented it yet.
Hungry? Follow the smell of Memphis-style barbecue to a plate of slow-smoked heaven. Being the pork barbecue capital of the world, we know how to do it right. But, we don’t stop there. Try our southern favorites, fresh seafood, or fine dining – all within an easy walking distance. We recommend Blues City Café, Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous or Majestic Grille.
Don’t worry about transportation. Jump on a downtown trolley to get from Beale to all points in-between. Within just a few blocks, you can pay respect to three kings.
Tip your hat to “Lucille” and enjoy authentic blues music at B.B. King’s Blues Club on Beale. Walk a few steps to the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum to explore Elvis’ rise to fame plus other legends of Sun Studio, Hi Record and Stax recording studios. Retrace the steps of Dr. Martin Luther King at the National Civil Rights Museum that pays tribute to the struggle of equality. With so many things to do in downtown Memphis, it will be hard to fit everything in.
Indulge yourself with a visit to the Orpheum Theatre – where Broadway meets Beale. Their playbook includes performances by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Memphis Ballet, national comedy acts and, of course, Broadway hits. During the summer months, this elegant theatre lights up the night with classic movie films shown on the big screen – complete with popcorn, costume contests and trivia.
With all there is to see and do, make your plans to cruise the American Queen to Memphis - we’re just right up the river.
