Main Street Trolley

NOTE: MATA has temporaily suspended all trolley use as they work toward complete vehicle maintenance overhauls. We apologize for any inconvenience.

While the trolleys are out of service, MATA will utilize a fleet of new hybrid electric busses that will take a route along Main Street between Central Station and the beginning of the Main Street Mall and then make a loop utilizing Front Street and Second Street to complete the circuit now covered by the Main Street Trolley Route. A Riverfront Loop service will operate along Front Street and then down to Riverside Drive and back up to the south end of Main, however much of the Riverside Loop for tourists is along track areas that cannot be used by a bus. The Madison Ave. route will continue to be covered by busses as well.

About the trolleys: Authentic vintage trolleys offer a nostalgic trip to some of downtown's most notable attractions and a breathtaking view of the mighty Mississippi River along the magnificent Riverfront.

EXPERIENCE:Memphis' trolleys invoke memories of the simple days of yesteryear. Some of downtown's most notable destinations are available on the Main Street trolley route such as the Memphis Cook Convention Center, Civic Center Plaza, Court Square, Peabody Place, Beale Street, National Civil Rights Museum, FedExForum and the South Main Historic Arts District. The Riverfront Loop trolley gives you access to the Tennessee Welcome Center, Mud Island monorail and museum. The Madison Avenue line features public art at each trolley station along the route. Each of the six artworks – which range from mosaic murals to sculptures – are designed to reflect the community in which the transit station is located.

HISTORY:The trolley follows the path of its mule-drawn predecessor, running along Main Street from Auction Avenue to G.E. Patterson Avenue. The Riverfront Loop trolley's 2.5-mile route offers outstanding views of the Mississippi River. The Madison Avenue trolley line gives riders access to Midtown and medical facilities. All the intricate details of the old trolleys have been faithfully restored to their original elegance – down to the solid brass seat and window accents, rare "glue-chip" glass transom windows, hand-carved mahogany corbels, and antique lighting fixtures.

INSIDERS TIP:Passengers may board the trolley at any of the stations along the line. Each Main Street and Riverfront stations are lift-equipped for persons with disabilities who are unable to use steps.
