Known as the Palmer Home, Alex Haley’s boyhood home was built in 1919 by Will Palmer, his maternal grandfather, and opened as a museum in November 1986. As a child, it was on the porch of this house that Haley heard from his maternal grandmother, the family stories that inspired him to write Roots.
The new edition, The Alex Haley Interpretive Center, was officially opened August 13th 2010. The 6500 square foot award winning center features interactive exhibits, interpretive education, artifacts from Mr. Haley’s life, and mementos from his career. It is conveniently located behind the boyhood home and final resting place of Alex Haley, in Henning, TN, 45 miles north of Memphis.
